Kepler College was born from the creative audacity and hard work of a group of astrologers and educators. They believed that for astrology to have a brighter future, you needed to develop high quality education.
Nearly nine years after incorporation, in March of 2000, Kepler achieved a ground-breaking milestone: It received authorization from the Higher Education Coordinating Board of Washington to grant bachelor of arts degrees. Over the next four years, the College added associate of arts and master of arts degrees. Grounding the curriculum in the liberal arts, Kepler included a study of the ways in which different cultures and different time periods linked celestial events and human concerns. This included astrology's history, its inextricable links to the development of modern science, it's practice in different times and cultures, it's changing philosophies and its controversies and concerns.
As the College developed, it battled the preconceptions of accrediting agencies and other educators, many of whom dismissed any possibility that these various facets of astrology could be part of a well-rounded academic curriculum. It also battled misunderstandings and distrust from astrologers. Unfotunately, these competing tensions were not resolved by the time a larger crisis arrived: the economic downturn of the 2008-2009. Unable to gain the financial resources required to complete accreditation as required by the State, Kepler could not keep its academic program. Currently its academic students are in a teach-out mode. This gives them the chance to complete their degrees by March 2012. Kepler's is now focused on helping these students as well as developing a certificate program and other educational options for the general public and all serious students of astrology.
