Instructor: Bruce Scofield.

10-week online class. Students will have a course site with course materials, discussion forums and more. Students will also meet once a week for an online conference to discuss the materials.

Most chart interpretation is done on the ecliptic using standard aspects and sign and house positions. But there are other ways to get similar information from a chart that are based entirely on symmetry. Probably best known of the symmetrical techniques is declination, planet distance relative to the celestial equator. Other traditional techniques that employ symmetry include antisia and Arabic points. The Hamburg School, aka Uranian Astrology, and later Ebertin's Cosmobiology, place a major emphais on symmetry and nearly all interpretive work is based on it.

This is a 10-week in-depth online class. The class website will have readings, discussion forums, assignments and more. There is also a live 1 hour online meeting each week to discuss the material and ask questions (if you miss the live session, you will get a copy of the recording).

  • Week 1: Coordinate systems - measuring the sky
    • Week 2: Declination and Latitude
      • Week 3: Antiscia and proportional arcs, equal openings
        • Week 4: Lots (Arabic Parts)
          • Week 5: Intro to Uranian Astrology
            • Week 6: Midpoints and Planetary Pictures on the 360 degree dial
              • Week 7: Midpoint trees, midpoint sorts, arc openings
                • Week 8: The 90 degree dial and houses
                  • Week 9: Solar arc and the TNPs
                    • Week 10: Edith Wageman and the Composite Chart

From Bruce:

Symmetry is a fundamental property of the universe. The definition that I use, is that symmetry of a physical system is a physical or mathematical feature of the system that is preserved under change.

There is another term, isometric, which has to do with equal measure. This term is also relevant. When things reflect, there is a match-up, an equal measure that occurs. These fundamental principles were of great interest to the Greeks. They are core components of geometry and they play an important role in astrology because astrology can be organized around symmetry.

Take for example, the sequence of the signs of the zodiac. We give them qualities and label them according to a scheme of elements. There is symmetry in that scheme. Aries is a fire sign, and another fire sign is a third of the way through the zodiac and so on. You can also see symmetry in regard to aspects, for example in applying and separating orbs. We see symmetry in synodic cycles, such as the quarters of the lunar cycle. There is also a kind of symmetry related to declination and the use of the anticia. Midpoint astrology as developed by Uranian Astrology and Cosmobiology is a further development of the idea of symmetry.

My good friend Gary Christen has worked with these ideas in depth and developed the concept of symmetrical astrology. This course looks at all these ideas, bringing them together as Gary has, into a broader and more emcompassing principle.

To read some additional information on the development of Symmetrical Astrology, please see Gary Christen's articles at Astrolabe:

This workshop can be taken as an independent class or as a prelude for CS102 Traditional Medical Astrology and CS101 Horary Astrology in depth (this workshop or the equivalent is required for these two courses).

How do you determine which planet is stronger when looking at aspects? How do you quickly find the strongest planets in the chart? Or which planets may pose more challenges even if they aren't aspected or mainly have trines? Classical astrologers used essential dignities and debilities. These were their building blocks for interpretation.

In the history of Astrology there were five Essential Dignities. In the last two centuries, three of them have often been ignored, but in this workshop, we will present them in their entirety.

Students will meet using an online conference service for 4 hours each day. There will be a short assignment to be completed between the end of class on Saturday and the beginning of class on Sunday. Supplemental materials will be provided on the course website.

Saturday: 10 am - 12 pm Pacific (1 pm - 3 pm Eastern)
                 1 pm - 3 pm Pacific (4 pm - 6 pm Eastern)

Sunday: 10 am - 12 pm Pacific (1 pm - 3 pm Eastern)
               1 pm - 3 pm Pacific (4 pm - 6 pm Eastern)
