Astronomy and astrology have the same origins in the explorations and explanations of the visual sky. Astronomy is the study of the nature, motions and history of the Earth's cosmic environment. In this course, specifically designed for Kepler College students, we will emphasize themes relevant to a general understanding of the subject rather than one involving technical knowledge and mathematics. Our text book is "The Evolving Universe" by Michael Zeilik, an easy to read college astronomy text with many illustrations and well-thought out exercise questions - a number of which are assigned.
Astrology has a rich heritage stretching back thousands of years. We sometimes think of astrology as just one thing, but different cultures asked different questions as they found meaning in the ever-changing sky. This class offers a survey of the history of astrology, primarily in the West.
Primary Instructor: Joseph Crane
The student should have a background in the basics of modern astrology prior to taking this course.
The Hellenistic underpinnings of modern astrology are being re-discovered as more texts are translated. Using primary texts of the Hellenistic astrological tradition and modern commentaries, this certificate introduces the student to Hellenistic techniques and procedures plus develops basic chart interpretation skills in both natal and predictive.
Every serious student of astrology should at least take an introduction to this tradition in order to fully appreciate the richness of our own astrological history!
Using primary texts of the Hellenistic astrological tradition and modern commentaries, this certificate introduces the student to Hellenistic techniques and procedures plus develops basic chart interpretation skills in both natal and predictive.
Joseph Crane, author of Astrological Roots: The Hellenistic Legacy, brings together various Hellenistic sources to show students how they can incorporate the richness of these older techniques into their own natal practice.
The course introduces students to ancient terminology and concepts, philosophical underpinnings, and how this applies to chart interpretation and synthesis. Along the way, Joseph will highlight where Hellenistic and modern astrological methods are similar and where they differ.
Students will apply these concepts to the natal chart to assess fame and fortune, relationships, vocation, and character.
The following courses cover the history and astronomy of astromapping and current applications related to geodetics, local space, relocation, and astro*carto*graphy.
Primary Instructor: Karen McCauley
In addition to her expertise in psychological astrology, Karen McCauley has been active in astro*carto*graphy for many years. She is the administrator for Continuum (dedicated to educating others about astro*carto*graphy and certifying practitioners). She also maintains the certification test.
