Astrology and Culture

Shortly before our academic program ended in 2012, Kepler took the core of the astrological program and re-visioned it into a program where students could earn individual certificates as they explored different subject areas in depth. But we also wanted to provide a full program that covered a broader range of astrological studies. The diploma program requires 12 courses plus 2 chart calculation labs. The program is not easy and takes at least 3 years of study. Maki took on that challenge. Along the way she earned a certificate in the Fundamentals of Natal Astrology, Moving the Chart in Time and The Astrology of Relationship. She had to work twice as hard as most of our students as English is her second language. Her teachers all agree that she is well deserving of the honor of being our first Diploma Graduate!

I've been learning astrology and reading horoscopes for clients for few years before I entered into Kepler College. But the main reason that drove me to study at Kepler was because I couldn’t feel satisfied with my knowledge, skill and performance in counseling with clients. I felt conflict often about what the proper attitude and behavior I should hold as a practicing astrologer. I questioned myself often about “did I really help my clients to understand their real problem and potential, or did I just led them to have blind faith in Astrology?”,” How are western astrologers doing their work?”…etc. For these questions, I decided to study at Kepler from beginning, and now I can say my decision has been ever so correct!

Congraduates to everyone here who worked hard and were able to successfully complete all the requirements for their degree.

Under the cover of a standard medieval romance, Chaucer’s Knight’s Tale is a grim and astrologically-rich contemplation of human passion, fortune, and destiny. This article ponders the purposes of the Knight’s Tale’s uses of astrology and astrological symbolism in the context of these larger issues. Why do gods and humans take on qualities of astrology’s planets? Why is so much timing for the action according to planetary hours and days? Of particular note is the poet’s presentation of “Duc” Theseus and his planetary symbolism. These issues also allow us to understand better the tie between the Tale and its narrator.

Instructors: Carol Tebbs, Jacqui Menkes, Judy Holloway or Lana Kirtser.

Either W112 or W113 may be taken to complete the certificate for Moving the Chart in Time. In addition, W112 may be taken as an elective for the certificate diploma; Pre-requisite: W110 (and preferably W111) or Challenge
You may have worked with transits, progressions, directions or other methods of moving the chart in time, but still find it difficult to synthesize all the different factors or choose the right tool to answer a specific question, this course will help.
Students will receive guided practice in learning how to analyze the chart, select an appropriate method for the issue at hand, identify key factors, help your clients understand life events and potentials for action and growth.

Instructor: Gary Christen

This course builds on the work done in E510 and E511. By the end of the course, students will not only understand how to implement the principles and techniques of Symmetrical Astrology, but be able to evaluate, select and apply specific principles as needed to help a client or answer a question with regard to chart interpretation, moving the chart in time and space, and forecasting.
Requirements: This is an advanced-level course. Students need a strong grounding in basic astrological symbolism and natal interpretation, and the principles of Symmetrical Astrology and its applied use in interpretation. E511 or equivalent required.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to Kepler College's survey to find out what topics are of interest to you for developing your astrological practice into a business. We received 70 responses to our survey in August 2013.  Here are the results, with the percentage of respondents interested in each topic.

There are scholarship opportunities for students who are interested in taking courses, but need financial assistance. There are scholarships available through the astrological organizations such as AFAN, ISAR and the AFA. Kepler College also has scholarship funds specifically for the Certificate and Diploma program courses. Scholarships are generally in the range of $200 to $250 per student, per term. Applications need to be submitted at least one month prior to the start of term. You only need to submit an application once per school year (Fall through Summer terms).

Kepler is highlighting astrological research throughout the month of September. Amy Shapiro has published the results of her research on careers and astrology in her new book Forces At Work. This book is for students and practitioners who want to look at parallels between Astrology and Career Development.  Based on an original Career Survey conducted between 1990-92, and a follow-up in 2012-13, cases show the arcs of people’s careers and subtle forces that guided their choices, correlated to their charts.  The findings are a long-term study of cosmic and psycho-dynamic links between Astrology and Career Theory with over 80 natal chart observations.  Chapter 2, Geocosmic Career Indicators, surveys ancient-to-modern Astro-Career Theories with insights by Austrian Astrologer, Dr. Oskar Adler, a fresh look at the Gauquelin Sectors, Part of Fortune, Asteroids, Chiron, Ceres and Eris, with cases of famous people’s charts with a prominent Eris: Sigmund Freud, Arnold Schoenberg, Joan Baez, Princess Diana, Steve Jobs and John Stewart.  In each, Eris serves the role of ‘Provocateur’ as a catalyst for evolutionary forces. In a special Resources section, Kepler College is recognized as a resource for Astrologers. Chapters 3 to 6 group 58 cases by their Sun/Moon/Horizon relation, and a chapter on Career Counseling gives practical advice to help your clients with career decisions.

In the Foreword, Economist, Ed Kaznocha writes: Aptitude tests and counseling help us to gain insight, yet do not touch on our inner, hard-to-express wants and needs. As Amy describes: ‘Forces at Work combines self-perception, motivation, astrology and career theory in the interplay of visible and invisible realms.’  Her research and this book achieve what no economic or statistical study can do.”

Imagine a way to access the details of your life-script (your karma). You could gain understanding of your life purpose, know when to seize opportunity, and have the foreknowledge to remediate difficult circumstances. This is the tradition of Jyotish, the astrology of India. This courses gives you tools to make use of the concepts and practices of Indian astrology, including how it can play a healing role in our lives, and how it can be an adjunct to your Western Astrological work.
The course will be hands-on with multiple example charts. Your astrological analytic skills will be strengthened through the use of the charts of ordinary people.

By the end of the term you will learn:

  • The rules for evaluating a planet’s aptitude and temperament, and how it will play out in the life.
  • To make sense of the often contradictory indications shown in the chart.
  • How the Varga (Divisional charts) provide additional insight on a specific topic.
  • The timing method of Dashas which determines when a planet will deliver on its promise.
  • Additional methods, including Indian transit principles, yogas (special planetary combinations), and the fascinating history of this unbroken astrological tradition.
